2024 MGC Christmas Camp.

Event Details:


    The Club will be holding its Christmas Camp at Raywood, home of the Bendigo Gliding Club. Raywood is185km north of Melbourne via the Calder Fwy, and about 30km north of Bendigo, being north of the ranges the site receives better weather.

    We plan on taking a tug, and a number of gliders depending on attendance.

    This is a great location for cross country flying. Depending on the weather, we plan to set daily tasks for group flying/mutual flights in the two seaters. There will also be a challenge task for the more competitive pilots to further develop your skills.

    For those who don’t fly, there are the following attractions in Bendigo:

       ·         Bendigo Mine.

       ·         Golden Dragon Museum

       ·         Bendigo walking tours.

       ·         Art gallery and studios.

       ·         And much more.

    Meet time:    10:00am at the BGC club house for:

       ·         Glider allocations.

       ·         Daily weather briefing.

        ·         Tasks.

       ·         Deciding where we’re going to eat for dinner.

    Launch:         12:00 onwards, earlier flights are possible.

    Aircraft:         Club and private aircraft.

    Pilot experience / competency:

    For XC min. B-certificate (highly recommended to have outlanding training completed)

    If you're not meeting the minimum requirements, you can discuss with our CFI to arrange for a mutual XC flight in one of our two seater gliders or local soaring. 

    Event type: Cross country flying and coaching dependent upon availability of instructors.

    Environment:          Flatland flying.

    Launching:              MGC tugs.

    Costs:

    Camp costs around $80, which covers transport of the tug and gliders.

    Airfield usage fee of $15 / day for private gliders.

    Meals:  Combination of:

       ·         Raywood Hotel.

       ·         Local BBQ.

       ·         The Old Boundary Hotel (Bendigo)

       ·         Brougham Arms Hotel. (Bendigo)

       ·         The Social. (Bendigo)

    Nearest shops are in Bendigo 20min away.

    Accommodation:

    On site camping is available, $15 / night.

    There is limited accommodation at Raywood but plenty at Bendigo.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    • Plan to fly for 4-8hrs if you're doing cross country task.
    • Ensure you bring sufficent water, food and sunscreen when you come to the airfield and when you're flying.
    • Register for a free account on www.onlinecontest.org and/or https://www.weglide.org/ and upload your flights. Weglide allows you to attach photos to your task. 
    • Become familiar with rigging and de-rigging the glider's you are intending to fly on the camp. 
    • The club aircraft have 'EDS Cannula' for use but the club encourages people to buy their own from sites such as: https://www.flightgear.com.au/  or   https://wingsandwheels.com .
    • The club aircraft have 'Pee tubes' fitted. Prior preparation is needed if you are planning to use them during the camp. It goes without saying, that it is expected that you flush/clean the tubes & glider outside after your flight.
